In this edition of EmpowHER's, "HER Daily Dose", Bailey Mosier discusses a study that finds that although Nutritional Information labels are legally compliant they are not very consumer friendly.

Hi, I’m Bailey Mosier and this is your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose.

In March 2010, a federal health reform law required restaurants with 20 or more locations to provide nutritional information for menu items and self-service foods. But a recent study found that just because that information is available, doesn’t mean it’s helping consumers make healthier choices.

Researchers from the Columbia University School of Nursing zeroed in on a sample of 12 fast-food chain restaurants in a New York neighborhood and found that even though most nutrition information provided was legally compliant, it wasn’t useful for anything other than individual servings. Complex math skills were needed to interpret meals designed to serve more than one person.

The researchers acknowledge they only looked at one community but say their work suggests the need for more understandable and useful calorie information in posted menus because what they found was legally compliant but not consumer-friendly.

That wraps up your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose. Join me here at EmpowHER.com every weekday for your next dose of women’s health.
