Personal Chef Melissa Costello describes whole foods and shares why they are an important aspect of a woman's diet.

Whole foods are basically any food with one ingredient, you know? Broccoli, spinach, unprocessed – rice, brown rice, any food that is not processed. So, if you go into your produce section in the grocery store, that’s a whole food; if you go to the bulk section in the grocery store, that’s a whole food. Oats, grains, nuts, seeds, so anything really with one ingredient that’s not processed is basically what a whole food is.
Whole foods are really important because the body needs optimal nutrition and you get the most nutrition from whole foods. They are not processed so there’s nothing really lost in a processing and the best way to eat whole foods obviously is raw because there’s most live enzymes in raw food, but lightly steamed or sautéed is really good. Whole foods have a lot of nutrition so it’s really important to, you know, Socrates said it, “Food is thy medicine,” so it’s really important to get your nutrition from your food.
