Dr. Berkus:

I think the key word is doctor. You know, if she is seeing a doctor because of medical issues they need to know about her eating disorder. If she is going in, whether it’s to a dentist, whether it’s to an eye doctor or whether it’s to a primary care doctor, whether it’s to an OB/GYN, they need to know if she is struggling with providing nourishment for her body because the consequences of these eating disorders affect all organ systems and so again, the hardest thing, because of the amount of shame and guilt and sadness involved in these disorders, is to be honest with her physicians.
