What Causes An Eating Disorder? - Dr. Berkus (VIDEO)

Dr. Berkus:

Hi, I’m Dr. Vicki Berkus, I’m in private practice as a psychiatrist in Oro Valley, Arizona, which is in Tucson, and right now I spend most of my time with patient care, but I am also a past President on the board of the International Association for Eating Disorders Professionals, called IAEDP and so I am busy also educating other professionals to work with patients with eating disorders.

I work with all types of patients – men, women, adolescence and I am dedicated to helping people understanding more about eating disorders.

That’s a question I probably hear most – why does my child, why does my loved one have an eating disorder? And my answer is, it’s not as simple one reason, its multi-factorial, probably several reasons, but we divide it into the fact that based on the patients that we see, there can be a combination of a genetic personality vulnerability, there can be some social things going on at that time in their life. It can be a combination of medical problems; it can be a combination of family issues. So there’s so many things that make up the complexity of each patient that there’s no one simple answer to that question.
