Love Is a Great Stress Management Tool

I feel great joy from spending time with my brother and his family. Of course I love my brother, but let’s face it, my 5-year-old niece makes my heart just jump with love every time I see that bright smile that is just for me.

Every month I make every effort to plan to spend time with them just to get that hit of love seeing her run to give me a hug. This weekend, I met them in the park and got the hug I wait for each month. My niece was excited to tell me about her next-door neighbor’s new dog and how she was helping her to take care of it, since it arrived the day before. As soon as we got to the house, she disappeared into her neighbor's house to play with the dog.

I was heartbroken that I was not the center of her universe as I usually am. I felt a noticeable sad that she wasn’t there to play with me. About 30 minutes later, she appeared again, this time with the two-pound puppy. She was so excited about showing me how to carefully pet the dog. As I watched her, my heartbreak turned into a larger, more open heart as I realized how she was growing up and getting stronger interests.

Children have the incredible way of helping you to see how simple things can bring you love and joy. In times where people are feeling stressed and short on hope, taking joy in any small acts of kindness and love act as an important stress reliever and maintain and improve our emotional and physical health.
