Getting the flu is never fun. It is something most people try to avoid. They might get an annual flu shot, wash their hands thoroughly, and stay away from people who are sick.

But sometimes even after all your best efforts, the influenza virus makes its way into your body and you are stuck. Despite trying to avoid it, you've got it.

So now what?

Once you have the flu, you may experience chills, body aches, headaches, sore throat, congestion or a runny nose. You may suffer from a cough, diarrhea, vomiting or a fever. It is important to note that not everyone who has the flu will have a fever, according to the CDC.

When you are dealing with all this misery that comes with the flu, the idea of getting through this time faster can be very enticing.

The good news is that there are ways to get through the flu faster. However, the first thing you need to do is to stay home and avoid contact with other people, except to get medical assistance.

That won’t get you healthier faster, but it will keep you from getting other people around you sick, which could keep you from getting the flu again right away.

There are some home remedies that will actually help you get through your current influenza experience faster. Try some of these remedies, alongside over-the-counter medicine specific to your varying symptoms.

1) Take a warm shower.

Besides getting you clean, a warm shower can help moisten and thin the mucus in your sinuses. Keep the bathroom door closed to create your own personal sauna.

2) Drink more water.

Don’t get dehydrated. Aim for drinking at least 64 ounces of liquid each day. Water is best, but other liquids work as well. Liquids can also help to thin the mucus and ease your congestion. Avoid drinks that dry you out such as alcohol, coffee or caffeinated tea.

3) Eat some soup.

Chicken soup really might be the ticket to helping you get better. Go for the kind with lots of spices which can help to thin out the mucus buildup. Chicken soup can also increase the white blood cells in your immune system, which work to fight off diseases.

4) Rest.

It is hard, but try to get as much rest as you can when you are sick. Sleep can give your immune system a boost, and it also gives your body the time it needs to bounce back.

5) Take antivirals.

When you have the first signs of the flu, call your doctor to see if antiviral drugs can be prescribed. When taken within 48 hours of the first flu symptoms, these drugs can help to significantly shorten the duration of your illness.
