I have been fighting breast cancer for 10 years now, and have found that not only have there been health issues, but I am financially and mentally zapped. The thing I'm looking forward to now is that I can file bankruptcy again in 2013 (that's sad). Going in I had a great job, stocks, bonds, life insurance, etc. Since my fight began, I have used all savings (mine and my adult children), cashed in insurance policies, stocks, and bonds, in a effort to protect my credit. All of this was to no avail. I have faced homelessness several times, the last of which required my daughter to leave her job overseas, come home and find me a place using her credit credentials. No one wants to give me a chance with all of these medical bills and a bankruptcy on my credit report. Anyway, because everything is in my daughter's name, I am unable to ask for any bill assistance through the city or state, and we are all spent out. I have applied for affordable housing which has a 2 to 3 year waiting list, and most apartment complexes want your income to be 3 times the rent (disability is just not enough for that). I try to supplement my income through catering but those jobs have been few and far between, and most part time jobs I could do, can't or won't work around my chemo and treatment appointments. So, I live in Virginia Beach, Va. and am hoping that someone has gone through this, found a way out, and may have some advice for me. Thank you all for listening.

Hello Stillfighting -
I am saddened, but not surprised, by your comments. The general public seems clueless most of the time about the fiscal impact of cancer, which can sometimes be worse than dealing with the disease. An organization that might be able to help you is the Patient Advocate Foundation, which offers help with what they call medical debt crisis, and many other aspects of the high costs of care and support. Here is a link to them: http://www.patientadvocate.org/patient_services.php?p=761

There are also resources included in this article from EmpowHER: https://www.empowher.com/cancer/content/coping-cancers-financial-burden-how-find-help-right-now?page=0,0

I hope this helps and wish you the best in the days ahead.
