Low Milk Supply

By October 28, 2011 - 3:18pm

Hey mamas! I am a first time mom with a 4 month old boy, Liam, and have been breastfeeding exclusively, but lately (for about the past 3 weeks) it seems I just can't produce enough milk to make Liam happy. I have been trying a lot of different things such as drinking 5 cups of Mother's Milk tea per day, pumping after every feeding, drinking more water, pumping in between feedings. Is it possible that my hormones are just making it so I can't make as much milk (I did get my period when he was 8 weeks and again at 12 weeks)? I really don't want to switch to formula, but he is very fussy at night and only in the 5th percentile for weight. Please help!

Has he always been a light weight? :). My first suggestion would be to spend a few days at home in bed with the baby and let him nurse as much and as often as he wants. He could just be going through a growth spurt. You may also want to see a good lactation consultant to check for tongue tie as well if there is concern about his weight.

If you do find that you need to supplement try an sns at the breast so that you continue to keep your supply at level.

Also fwiw, nightime fussiness is also very common right before a major milestone like rolling, or sitting etc.
