Kids in the sun

By August 12, 2011 - 8:25pm

My daughter is three years old and we have spent most of our summer outside. I am good about putting sunscreen on my kids and lucky they have good skin. 4 times this summer after playing most of the day outside, my daughter has woken up about 10PM throwing up in bed. She would throw up and then be completely fine. Never sick, no fever. Any idea what this may be? The food she eats those days are not different from other days.

Hi momthree

Thanks for your post!

It sounds like your daughter may be suffering from heat exhaustion on these days or even sunstroke. There is also a condition called sun poisoning you can read about here: http://www.empowher.com/wellness/content/sun-poisoning

Are your children playing in water? Summer water fun is the best fun ever for kids! But children often don't drink enough when in the water - not half as much as if they were playing in a park or in their gardens. Swim play gives us a false sense of hydration because we're immersed in water but we need to remember to drink just as much or we risk dehydration.

It sounds like your daughter is getting rather mild cases of any of the above but in future, make sure she wears a hat, drinks lots of water and is allowed inside to cool off on a regular basis. Outdoor fun is a must for kids but their little bodies need time in cool and shaded places to rehydrate.

Also, take a look at this recent article by HerWriter Kristan Appleford that gives great advice on how to keep kids safe from too much sun and heat during these dog days : http://www.empowher.com/parenting/content/keep-kids-safe-heat-related-illnesses

I hope this helps, momthree!
