dry eye syndromes

By August 4, 2010 - 10:54pm

My eyes began to get red, sore and irritated as a side effect to meds for Chronic Fatigue syndrome. I have read that this condition can be due both to CFS and menopause. My OTC drops for Dry eyes isn't helping. I'm 51, officially menopausal next month. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi Seri1

I've been doing some research on your question and there definitely seems to be a correlation between CFS and dry eye - even without medications being a factor.

If your dry eye is connected to menopause, then it may leave once you are out of menopause and you're right, it's a common complaint of menopausal women due to hormonal changes.

There are meds out there like Restasis that ease symptoms but also cause the formation of tears but you'd need a prescription for this.

From a nutritional point of view, make sure you take a good balance of omega 3, 6 and 9 and take Vitamin E.
You can place a small hot towel over your eyes and always wear sunglasses outdoors, even if it's cloudy. This can avoid dirt, sand and wind particles from irritating your eyes further.

Have you talked to your doctor about this?
