I can't even remember the last time our kids had school lunches..we hvae been packing our lunches EVERY day for the last few years..and with all those lunches we tend to fall into a pattern (well I get bored making the same PB&J every day) our son loves those and beings that he is hypoglycemic and on the thin side the protein from the peanut butter is perfect and keeps is blood sugar stable. Our daugther loves packing her lunches and carrys a cloth napkin as a "placemat" to put down on the school table. She will take pretty much anything in her lunch from rice to homemade gaucamole..I buy the right containers to keep the food at proper temps...I even woke one morning and popped homemade popcorn as she wanted to take some in a bag as a snack..:)

I have vowed that I am not going to stress about school lunches this year. Something I am trying with my 3rd grader and Kindergartener is to make a list of the healthy, minimally processed foods they like then sit down at the beginning of the week and make a menu, just like they get sent home from school for the cafeteria. Each night after dinner we pull out the menu and they pack their lunch themselves so in the morning they are ready to go. We started school last week so are on day 5 of school and so far it is a hit! They really like putting their own lunches together and look forward to eating what they personally packed.
