This is for anyone who has been having problems with their thyroid medication working, and would like to try a different brand/type of medication yet your Doctor is not willing.

Try, try again until you feel your own euthroid state!

Merry Christmas, and many hopes for a great 2012!

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease at the age of 31 and it took only 4 years for my symptoms to get so bad that I had to stop working for about 2 years. I was eating healthy and exercising all my life, however it didn't prevent the disease and its rapid progression. As many other Hashimoto's patients I was going from doctor to doctor and found not too much help from conventional medicine.

When you feel fatigued all the time and are unable to function it means that your condition is severely undertreated. I think that the only way out of it comes when you realise that if you do not get in charge of your health and actively start looking for the right information and find the right doctor most likely you won't improve. There is no way around it.

There are more and more doctors who prescribe T3 thyroid medication, modulate the immune system, balance the hormones, treat leaky gut syndrome and know that thyroid and Hashimoto's patients need a special diet to feel well again. You just have to start looking and don't give up.

Thank you for the response! Your blog has been quite interesting, and of course exactly what many of have been through ourselves.

My question is this: While feeling so down like the rest of us, how do you bring yourself up enough to start making the changes that need to happen? I have always stated that thyroid patients need to be looked at as a whole, (which we all know is pretty hard for some in the medical community, or else they do look at the whole and have a zillion things for you to use at a high cost) but coming to grips with an entire lifestyle change can be overwhelming for many. Small steps at first can certainly help, but when you’re already at the bottom sometimes you just don't have the energy to start pulling yourself up!

No one wants to be on this roller coaster for the rest of their lives, but it is like telling someone if they can just get to the other side of a cliff, there is a lever to pull to lower the bridge. Well, without the bridge how do you get to the other side! It is an endless loop of changes that need to take place, yet sometimes just getting out of bed is a challenge in itself.

Should I eat healthier? Sure! But with some weeks not having enough money to buy anything except a $1.00 box of pasta, or simply not having the strength to stand for longer than 5 minutes to prepare a meal, it leaves one with the spirit of giving up.

Any advice on how to make that first step across the cliff without the bridge would be greatly appreciated here :)

Take Care,

There are many types of thyroid dysfunction when thyroid medication is not necessary or just changing the brand may not bring better results. Since it doesn't change the treatment most conventional doctors do not look for a cause of the thyroid problem and only deside wheather to prescribe medication or not to treat it. This leads to mismanagement of the thyroid disease and poor results. In this thyroid video Dr. Walsh talks abot thyroid defects that most likely won't be diagnosed and properly treated by your doctor:
