Sexting on the rise

By August 31, 2011 - 7:53pm

My boyfriend and I are in a semi-long distant relationship. We live in different cities, but try to see each other once a week or so. I have never been the type of person to try phone sex and have never really "sexted" with anyone, and bf has not had many sexual experiences period. Recently, our text messaging through out the days have grown to be borderline naughty. It doesn't feel as awkward as I originally assumed it would be. In fact, it almost seems to put an extra bounce in my step to know he wants and misses me. My questions are, does this seem like an issue that could become detrimental to a relationship? Has anyone else ever tried sexting, and what was the experience like? How did it turn out?

I am also in a relationship which places limitations on how much we see each other. My boyfriend and I have been together for nearly a year now and only see each other on the weekends, so remaining involved in each others' lives is going to look different than a couple who can see each other more often or with more flexibility. Because of this, you need to be creative. Sexting and phone sex I think are healthy in moderation- flirtatious and salacious language can be fun and help remind each other that you have that attraction. However, if every conversation turns into sexting/ phone sex, then there's a problem. I think having an open conversation with your boyfriend about how it makes the both of you feel is a good place to start. Also, placing limitations on it isn't bad- it might be fun to receive a dirty text, but is either of you sending/receiving it during work hours appropriate?

Left to run wild and be overused, it could be a problem- but in moderation I think the two of you have found a fun and discreet way of remaining sexually involved with one another when you can't be together in person.
