Dr. Friedman:

When you find an endocrine deficiency such as, for example, low estrogen level in a woman undergoing menopause, if you treat the person with estradiol or other types of estrogen replacement then the hair loss can improve.

So, many of these are reversible, some of these improve and maybe not go back to great hair, you know, lessen the hair loss but maybe don’t return to normal. And sometimes it’s really a genetic problem that all the estrogen you want to give may not help at all.

And I think it’s important for women and all patients to take a good supply of vitamins mainly in their diet and the foods they eat. They should eat a balanced diet.

If someone is not getting a healthy diet in their foods it’s probably worthwhile for them to take a multivitamin. But there’s no evidence that supplementation of different types of vitamins, B vitamins or any other supplement has really been shown to help with hair loss.
