Cheerios: Not As Heart Healthy As It Claims?

Many of us would like for Cheerios to be a healthy cereal. Especially those of us who grew up on them.

But Evita Ochel, B.Sc., B.Ed., CHN, has lifted off the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, exposing a very different picture. Here is her reaction to the belief of many people that Cheerios is a healthy cereal.

"When I ask why they would think so, the most common answers I get is that it has no sugar (false), that it is part of a high quality breakfast (false) and that it helps them stay healthy (also false). And so people think that somehow it, is an exception to the rule."

Cheerios' first ingredient listed is whole grain oats, but since it's ground to a fine flour, it no longer is a whole grain. The second ingredient is corn starch. Not particularly nutritious and very likely genetically modified. The third ingredient is sugar. Hmmmm.

Fourth is salt. Fifth is trisodium phosphate (TSP), a cleaning agent, stain remover and degreaser. While the FDA allows TSP as a food additive, it's not exactly a claim to health. Puts Cheerios in a different light.

Funny that Cheerios are endorsed by the American Heart Association. They help your body to remove cholesterol. When you take a whole grain and grind it down for a recipe and put ALL of it in the recipe you STILL have whole grain oats.

Sending your comments to the good folks at Cheerios.
