Don’t Make This Weight Loss Mistake

When I decided to commit to losing my post pregnancy weight, there were two things that I knew that I needed to focus on, changing my eating habits and increasing my physical activities.

I am trying to be disciplined about my eating, but coming off the holiday season it has not been easy. To stick with my plan, I am eating about every 3 hours each day. In the morning, I have my coffee (something that I just cannot give up) and with it, the evil flavored creamer. I use one tablespoon a day and that is my daily treat.

For breakfast, I have a protein smoothie and it is usually in the car as I drive my kids to school. This may not be the ideal breakfast for everyone but it is a big improvement from my prior breakfast of a Starbucks grande latte and a muffin or coffee and nothing else.

Since I am usually out around 10:00 when my hunger hits again, I make it a habit to carry a piece of fruit and raw nuts (almonds, walnuts or cashews). For lunch and dinner, I concentrate on having lean meat with fresh fruits and raw vegetables. I have another snack mid-afternoon. I am careful to have protein with EVERY meal or snack. If I do not, then the classic weight loss mistake can easily occur.

It was yesterday morning that I had my typical breakfast of coffee and a protein smoothie. As my busy day moved forward, I did not take the time to have a healthy mid-morning snack. Besides, I really wasn’t hungry and it would be helpful to save the calories if I didn’t need to eat, right. No, very wrong. When I didn’t stock my body with fruit and protein during snack time, it made me very vulnerable at lunch time when all kinds of tempting food was near.

As I made my boys their lunches, I eyed the salami and fresh crusty loaf of bread from the bakery. My mouth began to water and my stomach growled as I built their perfect little sandwiches and carefully arranged baby carrots and strawberries on their plates. There was only one corner left on the square plates and that was reserved for the Doritos. I opened the bag and reached in for a handful for each plate. The nacho cheese smell drifted up to my nose as the cheesy dust clung to my fingers. I heard the sharp CRUNCH as a chip broke. Surely, one chip couldn’t hurt.

As that crispy chip entered my mouth, I couldn’t stop thinking about the next one. Before I could stop myself, I had eaten two servings (about 24 chips) and almost 300 calories, in LESS than ten minutes! Especially considering the killer cardio kickboxing class that I had attended that morning, I wanted to cry. I reached for a napkin to wipe the cheese off my hands and dab the tears welling in my eyes. How could this have been avoided? If I would have snacked, I would not have been so weak and hungry.

What do you do when you make a mistake? Learn from it and move forward. If you are following me with a weight loss goal, please be sure to feed your body enough healthy food so you will be able to resist temptation.
