Enjoying the holidays without gaining weight can be easy as long as you take a few moments to plan your activities in advance. As I discussed last time eating on a regular schedule will help prevent you from eating the cookies, cakes and other high calorie, low nutrient foods that are so available during the holidays at work and at parties.

If you are not over eating it will help prevent you from gaining weight during the holiday season. Eating a good balanced whole food meals during the day will help you to feel full longer and prevent the need to eat so many holiday treats.

Many of my patients don’t like my advice of eating before they go to parties because they want to eat drink and be merry. Here is my reasoning behind eating before you go out. If you don’t know what is on the menu at the holiday party you could end up going and not have a choice of what you want eating things that will not fill you up and start the overeating process. If you know the menu for the party and there is food that you want to eat then eat a small meal so you will not overeat the food at the party.

Eating a small meal before you go prevents you from eating several plates of high calorie foods. You shift your thought to having one plate of food and enjoying that one plate savoring the foods that you having waiting for can be really satisfying. It can make it worth the weight and it can make it worth just eating that one plate.

A way to enjoy the food you have been waiting for, is to make sure you are sitting down and you are not in an intense conversation which distracts you from enjoying your food. You would be surprised how these two simple suggestions can make you enjoy the food more.

The third reason to eat before you go to the party is so you can drink holiday cocktails. Eating helps prevent alcohol from getting into your system too quickly and getting you drunk. Many holiday cocktails can be stronger than you think and get you drunker than you expect. By the time you have had a few in the first hour you might already be tipsy causing you to have to leave early or worse not competent to drive home.

The message is simple make sure to eat good whole food meals during the holidays so you can indulge your taste buds at the party but not over eat.
