Milk for Breakfast: Busy Woman’s Guide to Eating Better

"So, I heard drinking milk instead of juice for breakfast is healthier. Is that true?" Sure is!

There are several reasons why starting your day with a glass of milk (or milk in your coffee) is a great choice. Milk is loaded with protein, vitamins and minerals. Milk at breakfast will help you:

Feel full longer: Protein takes a long time to digest - and makes anything you eat or drink with it slower to digest as well. Milk is a great source of protein. Having low fat or fat-free milk or yogurt in the morning will help you feel less hungry throughout the day and eat less.

Keep your bones strong: Most women get less than half the calcium they need to protect themselves from osteoporosis. One glass of milk can provide a third of your calcium for the day!

Level your blood sugar: Unlike fruit juice, milk helps keep your blood sugar from spiking and crashing. Two Harvard studies have shown people who make dairy foods part of their daily diets are less likely to develop diabetes.

Load up on Vitamin D: Researchers found young women who do not get enough vitamin D are three times more likely to develop high blood pressure. Yikes! One glass of milk in the morning give you a quarter of the vitamin D you need for the day.

Yes, milk is a great way to start the day!

Here are some breakfast ideas:

Start the day with a latte! Warm up 8 oz of milk in the microwave and then add coffee to taste. Mmmmm…. (skip the artificial sweetener!)

Make a parfait! (My daughter’s favorite) Layer low fat or non fat plain or vanilla yogurt with fresh fruit and whole grain cereal. Ummm… Ummm…

Smoothie it! Whip up milk, yogurt, fresh or frozen fruit and some flax seed for a quick start!

PS - chocolate milk contains the same vitamin, minerals and protein as regular milk!
