Something to Consider as You Start Your New Year's Health Plan

It’s a new year and at the beginning of each year people set goals for what they want to accomplish for their year. Creating and maintaining better health is always one the most popular goals for the new year. I have many patients that want to start the new year with a detoxification program to jump start their health plan. There are several reasons why someone might decide to start a detoxification program religious reasons associated with a holiday or preparation for a major event, to jump start a health regiment, during change of season, because someone told them it will help them lose weight. I’ve heard many different ideas. All are valid reason to start a program. All programs however are not valid and healthy for every person.

Detoxification programs are used to help clean out the organs that get toxins out of our body. The organs that are responsible most of our detoxification processes are the liver, intestines, kidneys and skin. Each of these organs communicates with one another creating health and vitality in our bodies. So when starting a detoxification plan it is key to make sure the plan is focusing on all the key organs of elimination.

Whenever someone starts a detoxification program their needs to be a solid healthy eating plan that focuses on a plant-based diet as the major component of the plan. This means including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. If the program recommends that you take a bunch of herbs for a course of 2-4 weeks and doesn’t have a dietary component it is not a good program. Eliminating toxins by having bowel movements daily is great but if you are eating fried chicken everyday while you are doing you are not reducing and eliminating toxins. Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water because this will flush the kidneys and liver and make sure the toxins get out of the body I also always recommend quiet spiritual reflection and cleansing as part of detoxification program. If we have negative thoughts or people in our life that will prevent us from attaining the health we are striving. We must look at our thoughts and get rid of the beliefs that no longer serve us so we can create good healthy thoughts and habits.
