Weight Loss is a Detoxification Plan

In the last blog I started talking about detoxification programs as a way of starting the new year trying to get healthy. Upon further thought I wanted to expand on the importance of detoxification because I am hearing so much about the topic of weight loss. Magazines, news articles and talk shows are devoting time to losing weight as part of a healthy new you in the new year. Creating a healthy weight is an important part of any health plan so I think it is great to find a healthy way to lose weight.

What many of my patients are not aware of is that toxins are stored in fat cells so as you lose weight by getting rid of fat you are also detoxifying your body as well. As you get rid of fat the toxins that have been stored there like, environmental pollutants, traces of drugs, pesticides, additives and preservatives get released into your bloodstream and circulate into your body. They will ultimately end up in the liver for detoxification. As you exercise more you will also burn fat and the same process will occur.

I want to continue talking about the detoxification process in the body by looking more specifically at the liver. Your liver is the organ that takes toxic substances in the body and changes their chemical composition to render them harmless so they can be eliminated without causing damage to our healthy cells.

Our detoxification process in the liver has two phases process. Phase one detoxification used a group of enzymes that is called the cytochrome P450 cycle, this cycle is mainly responsible for converting chemicals into a more harmless form of chemicals or changing them to an intermediate form that will be converted in the phase two detoxification process. Phase two focuses on adding a protective compound to a harmful chemical so the body can eliminate it harmlessly. In this phase one and phase two process of making toxic chemicals harmless free radicals are produced and the liver has to handle those too.

While you are creating a healthier body you have to consider you are detoxifying and make sure that you are eating whole foods based diet and drinking enough water to help your liver detoxification. Until next time….
