when I got back and I opened my eyes, and I could feel and understand stuff, and they had a breathing tube in my mouth, and my hands were tied and that was very, very scary. And yes, there was a certain amount of discomfort and pain, and they were giving me very high doses of painkillers. But it gets better pretty soon and the level of pain medication is good and high, so except like minor periods of extreme discomfort, most of the times it was bearable.
