Surprisingly, it’s very easy to explain to your kids. My husband was the one who was the tough cookie because he is of a nervous nature, and I guess it’s much more difficult for you when it’s your spouse who’s undergoing a major operation. But with my kids, all that we told them was, ‘Mommy has a hole in the heart and she needs to go to the hospital to get it repaired, and you will get to get to your friends’ houses’ and they surprisingly took it well.

They were only scared once when they came to visit me at the hospital because of the scar and the breathing tube and stuff. So we did not get them to the hospital more than once. But once I got back home, because I looked and behaved so normal, it really didn’t alter their lives much.
