Dr. Richard Fogoros:
Well, it’s critically important. As it turns out, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women and I think more women are aware of this now than they were three or four years ago but just a few years ago. Surveys show that 60 percent of women considered breast cancer to be their biggest health risk.

More disturbingly, that’s three or four years ago, the same survey showed that 60 percent of doctors considered breast cancer to be women’s greatest health risk. Well, if you look at the numbers, that’s just not true. Cancer kills about a quarter of a million women in the U.S. each year. It’s a huge number, and about 40,000 of those cancer deaths are due to breast cancer. So breast cancer is indeed a huge problem as is cancer in general but what people don’t realize is that half a million women die each year of heart disease, that’s twice as many as those die of cancer and ten times as many as they die of breast cancer. So heart disease is incredibly important in women and women and their doctors need to start thinking a lot about heart disease because it is something the can be prevented and treated.
