Dr. Andrew Atiemo describes how the Banner Thunderbird Cardiac Support Group provides support and helps patients learn about heart disease without the time constraints of a normal doctor visit. Dr. Atiemo practices his craft at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona.
Dr. Atiemo:
The Banner Thunderbird Cardiac Support Group arose out of a desire to offer the community more. We wanted to give patients an opportunity to come in and learn about heart disease in a safe environment. We also wanted patients to feel that they weren’t pressured by the time constraints that are often present in a standard office visit. So, we organized monthly educational sessions, which also function as a support group, so that patients can learn about heart disease and patients can also offer their own ideas and thoughts in terms of what has helped them in terms of dealing with their own illness.
I recently had a patient come up to me after one of our sessions and she held my hand and looked into my eyes and said to me, “You know doctor, this is wonderful. It really is wonderful what you are doing,” and as an interventional cardiologist who treats patients who have heart attacks I always feel incredibly rewarded to be able to help someone when they are sick and when they are dealing with a heart attack, but I must say that being able to get that type of feedback from a patient from our support group is equally as rewarding and it really helps to support the focus and the idea and our mission here at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

Dr. Atiemo is a cardiologist on staff at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, AZ. After completing his medical education at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Atiemo trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital. His passion for cardiology lead him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he trained in general cardiology and interventional cardiology.
