5) Your Thyroid Gland

Your thyroid gland is shaped like a butterfly in front of your windpipe and under your larynx or Adam’s apple.

This gland regulates your metabolism, which breaks down and converts food into energy for the body, with thyroid hormones T3 (tri-iodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine).

Your hypothalamus and pituitary gland regulate your thyroid and produce more hormones when thyroid hormone levels drop.

An imbalance in thyroid hormones can lead to hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, nodules or goiters in the thyroid gland, thyroiditis, thyroid cancer, insomnia, weight gain or loss, fatigue, and mood swings.

Your endocrine system consists of a network of glands and organs. Each one produces and secretes hormones which help regulate various bodily functions and maintain homeostasis, or balance in your body. When a gland or organ doesn’t operate properly, hormone imbalance and other health issues can occur. Although the endocrine system is comprised of 10 glands and organs, an issue with just one can cause a hormone imbalance and affect many areas of your body.

While hormone imbalance can cause unpleasant symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, low libido and memory loss, there are treatment options available. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is one option that can be used to restore your hormones to their optimal levels.

Bioidentical hormones are derived from naturally-occurring substances and are designed to replicate the chemical structure of the hormones that are produced naturally by your body.
