Dr. Aiello explains if prolotherapy can be used to treat lower back pain and discusses the safety of this procedure.

Dr. Aiello:
The most common condition that people come in to see me for has got to be back pain. I think that’s very common.

It affects their life as far as their work. It affects their ability to sleep. It affects their ability to go to the mall and walk around and shop.

It’s very interesting because I have always told my colleagues and my friends and family when we are talking about medicine is, when patients are depressed or patients have blood pressure or patients have diabetes issues, they will not necessarily go to the doctor to get that taken care of.

But when a patient has pain they will always, they will always come in to the doctor to do something about that pain, and that’s why this pain therapy has been such a great value and a great boon for my practice as far as helping people.

Prolotherapy is excellent for patients with chronic low back pain. That’s, I have had wonderful success. That’s been my greatest success area.

That’s where I initially started because I am an osteopath and I see lots of musculoskeletal patients and this has been a great value to the patients as far as enhancing their healing and some of the patients have been cured. Basically they haven’t come back to have their backs taken care of anymore.

As far as safety for prolotherapy when you do the injections you are very careful to be in the ligaments, near the bones so it’s very safe. You are not near any significant structures like arteries, veins, lungs, things like that.

So it’s an extremely safe procedure. As far as platelet rich plasma, the injection techniques are identical to that plus the person’s own blood is being re-injected.

There’s no other chemicals being added. So it’s an extremely safe procedure. It’s all done right in front of the patient. They understand what’s going on and I have had no problems.
