Head Shave

I woke up this morning to my right eye almost glued shut. I had an allergic reaction to something and my eye is super puffy. This use to happen all the time last year and I thought it was because I was allergic to rice. It hadn’t happened in quite some time so then I thought it was probably tied in with the cancer somehow.

When I went to see my primary care doc regarding this last year, he said it is because there are hives underneath the skin and it’s an allergic reaction. I wonder what triggered this. It’s really annoying and not to mention, ugly. I had rice and Chinese food from a takeout place the other night. Maybe that somehow triggered something.

Anyway, I went to CTCA today for my weekly Erbitux. I had several things I had to take care of there and Laura and I stopped in the salon to check out some of the new wigs and to see if they had time to do a head shave after chemo. I wasn’t sure I would go through with it, but it was worth a try.

I ended up at the salon a couple of hours later ready to shave my head. As soon as the stylist put the razor near my ear, I could hear the buzzing sound. I freaked out a little and told them I didn’t want to watch. I shut my eyes and held Laura’s hand as they slowly started taking off the hair.

It didn’t take too long and I had the stylist put on my wig before I had a chance to look at it. The wig felt much better and more secure than it did when I had the hair. It felt a little breezy so I bought a little warm hat to wear around the house to keep my head warm.

When we got home, I finally gathered the strength to look at my new head. It was more out of curiosity than anything else. it looked really strange…she didn’t take off all the hair down to the skin so there is a light covering of hair on my head. It felt really strange to rub my head.

It will be so nice to not have to do my hair for awhile. It will also be nice not to have to worry about hair coming out all over the place after I take a shower. I am surprised that it has taken this long for it to come out. The stylist said that some people’s hair comes out in large chunks. I’m so happy that didn’t happen to me.
