Dr. Patel:

So although the best thing you can do to decrease your chance of getting lung cancer is quitting smoking, your chance never goes to zero. It is substantially decreased the moment you stop smoking. However, you are always at slightly increased risk for developing lung cancer, and if you have any symptoms like cough, chest pain, or shortness of breath, you should seek your doctor’s attention and advice whether you need to have a further workup.
