Dr. Shosh:
Sleep deprivation is about the most under-talked about, you know, cause of postpartum depression. It is not only a symptom, but it can actually bring on a postpartum depression. Sleep is a medical necessity. It is not a luxury even for new mothers. So we need a certain amount of uninterrupted sleep per night, even if it just a few nights per week, but it can make the difference between wellness or illness. In Postpartum Depression For Dummies I make sure to outline this area because the sleep is so very important and I know breastfeeding women are very worried about getting that uninterrupted chunk that we need to make sure that the brain chemicals stay where they are supposed to stay. So I outlined exactly how they can do that without fear of losing their milk or, you know, there is a definite plan, as a matter of fact, a couple of them, that they can choose from so it works for everybody.
