Dr. Aklog:
A congenital heart defect is an abnormality of your heart that you’re born with. Most congenital heart defects are picked up or identified in childhood, and there are numerous, too many to really go through, that can be picked up in childhood and are usually treated in childhood or early adolescence. There are, however, some common congenital heart defects that are more mild and sometimes may not be picked up into adulthood and even mid and late adulthood.
By far the most common congenital heart defect in adult women is something called an atrial septal defect, and that’s often referred to as "a hole in the heart," which sounds fairly dramatic, and it’s an opening between the two atrial chambers, the receiving chambers of the heart, an opening that exists in the womb and is supposed to seal but just does not seal in some adults.
