Dr. Steinmann:
They don’t contribute to the arthritis at all, but it does slow down, a lot of my patients enjoy knitting and sewing and having arthritis at the base of thumb certainly can limit their enjoyment of those activities and that tends to be a problem that brings the patients in. If they can’t do their favorite avocations they will come in wondering why they have pain in their thumb and is there something that we can do for that.

About Dr. Steinmann, M.D.:
Dr. Scott P. Steinmann, M.D., is on orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center in Minnesota. Dr. Steinmann received his medical training from Cornell University Medical College in New York, completed his residency in orthopedics at New York Orthopedic Hospital and completed a fellowships focusing on the shoulder and hand surgery from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine respectively.
