Dr. Terris:
Unfortunately nowadays, it’s mostly by word-of-mouth, in terms of figuring out that type of information, but I think the patient is well within their bounds to ask the surgeon, “Well, how many do you do on a regular basis? How many have you done?” Or “What else do you do in your practice?” because what you really want is somebody who focuses on thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

For example, it’s the only operations that I do. So what you want is not only somebody who has a lot of experience but somebody who is focused on that type of surgery. They’re more likely to stay up with the latest techniques.
