That depends on how much skin they are exposing and what time of the year it is. In a place like San Diego or Arizona, if they were to spend 10 to 15 minutes on each side of their bodies, pretty well what we call full body exposure, they would actually produce 15-20,000 International Units of vitamin D in that short period of time. We don’t need that much, so I am going to say that probably at mid-day sun in summer they would need only about five to eight minutes on each side of the body to get that.
Now if you are going to expose only the hands and the face, there’s hardly any way that you can ever get enough vitamin D from that much of exposure. That’s an old wife’s tale. We need to expose a great deal of skin to get the vitamin D that brings us to optimal health and optimal levels.
