Deborah Kesten:
I think there are a few levels that go on that go on between, that could be beneficial between particularly mothers and their daughters because daughters very often get their sense of how they are in the world from their mothers, but also of course how they are, this is Psych 101, how their dads treat them and how they are with their dads. However, in terms of the mom and daughter kind of thing, you’ve always heard the concept: it’s not telling, it’s doing and showing by example.
So of course it’s being the kind of person you want your daughter to be and how you want your daughter to live, but it’s, again, it’s also from my perspective, it’s, in terms of self-esteem and having that sense, it’s to use the wonderful word empower, it’s empowering the teenage girl, your daughter, to have a sense of values in terms of what is and is not important to her with relationships, with friendships, and with boys and with girls, period. And with teaching and with education and with movies, and it doesn’t matter what the “it” is, with food. What is your relationship with your car, with your television, with the TV shows you watch, with your boyfriend, with your friends? What kind of food do you want to let into your life, what kind of boy do you want to let into your life, what kind of friends do you want to let into your life, what kind of qualities would they have to make your relationship with each aspect of your life as important as the relationship with your partner or your parents?
