Dr. Siris:
I think the best resource for women to learn about osteoporosis is the National Osteoporosis Foundation, which is based in Washington D.C. The website is www.nof.org. NOF is a non-profit, it’s an advocacy, education and research based organization. I had the privilege of serving as President of the NOF for the past three years. I am now the immediate past President.

It consists of clinicians and advocates for healthcare. One of the things we can provide patients is a wonderful little booklet just been updated called ‘Boning up,’ it’s free of charge. ‘Boning up’ has lots of extremely useful information about exercise, about calcium, about vitamin D, about what a bone density test looks like and how it feels, tells you about risk factors, tells you really all you need to know for yourself, for your mother, for your children, for your husband. It’s got lots of valuable information and knowledge is power, so you need to read about it more.

And I think it’s a very well written document written by, as I said, healthcare providers, specialists in osteoporosis and also individuals who deal in the public health domain.
