Dr. Dahiya:
In my office the support comes in sort of in the, I would say the crudest way–two forms. One is that, you know, we have once-a-month support group which is run by a nurse practitioner who herself has had the surgery. So, it’s not only that she is knowledgeable, she has worked in the practice for a while, but she also is a patient. But the most important one is what we provide day-to-day.

Somebody from our office is pretty much 24 hours, if you call, we’ll answer. We hand carry them for every little thing that happens. Not just that, “Well, you know, just do this or do that.” Pretty much somebody from the office between my coordinator, to me, somebody hand carries, handholds and says, “Okay, if you are having this we’ll get you through.” If you are having a wonderful time then everybody is sort of, “Hey, you know, you are doing a great job. You know, stick with it.” Either way it is, but we hand carry them.

The results that we have seen and the series have come out that those who do a lot closer follow-up, monitored, advised, they have a much better outcome than the ones who sort of just have the surgery and then they disappear and they come back in a year or six months. They don’t tend to have as good a result. Since the eventual thing is that we want to cure this disease and all of its comorbidities, all of the other illness that come with it, if we want to cure them, then we need to pay attention to that, and that’s the reason it’s important.
