Dr. Dahiya:
Whenever any patient comes, in case of a woman I always ask, request, “Bring your spouse; bring your family.” That’s the first thing. I think that we all need the support. Even though we are the decision maker and we want to be, but I think the support is very important over here. Sometimes the husband in the background doesn’t want to have or kids are afraid.

And then the third thing is that go to a support group. Granted that me as a physician, I have not had that operation. I can’t give them the real first-hand knowledge, “How does it feel?” But in the support group, there are people like them, and since it’s a variety, they will tell you all different things–wonderful, not so wonderful or whatever it is, and how do they cope with it.

And I think once we know that we can cope with it and that this would be the end result and that end result is going to be great, then I think our fear will dissipate. If the patient wishes to go see how the others are doing and go to a support group, we have once-a-month; it’s in the evening. Office has the schedule. At this point, there is no charge for it. There’s no obligation for it. It’s going sort of seeking information, finding out, be it fact-finding, be it that it’s going to allay my fear, whichever way you want to use it, that’s up to you.

There are going to be patients like you, including the one who runs that, she also had the bypass, and you are going to answer the question for even a young person, “Can I have children, not children,” because our lady who runs the support group, she has had kids after the bypass as well, and there are others who have had similar experiences. So it kind of gives you a vast first-hand experience, and at this point it’s no charge, no obligation.
