Dr. Dahiya:
It used to be that if you are overweight person, if you are morbidly obese and if you said, “Well, I am going to have an operation,” there used to be a taboo. “Oh, you took an easy route.” It’s not an easy route. So that’s one–the social taboo. The second misconception is that it’s a big deal surgery. There is so much cutting, sewing, and that, you know, “Am I really going to come out okay on the other side?”
And there is lot of publicity at one point. Fortunately that has subsided now, but there was lot of publicity that, “My God, so many people die or have this and that,” and it’s not. They should be rightfully so to the point that let’s get information; let’s go find out who does it best, you know, and then go proceed. Don’t let that stop you from getting help.
The third misconception right now is that, you know, with so much of marketing, advertising, there’s a word that creeps in. What is “minimally invasive”? Well, minimally invasive is whatever we can do through the laparoscope, through the tiny little cuts; that’s called a minimally invasive surgery. That’s not only LAP- BAND; it’s also bypass. Most of our surgeries these days are minimally invasive.
The third misconception is, “Oh, LAP-BAND® is reversible.” Well, first thing is why would you like it to be reversed? You reverse, it’s a 100% that you are going to go back to what you were. So you don’t need a reverse, but if you do, there are things in the human body that happen and it has to be done. At that point both procedures are reversible. Both procedures are reversible at the cost of another operation.
I am going to need another operation to remove the LAP-BAND® person has. I am going to need another operation, and again, laparoscopically to reverse the bypass that you have. I think those are the major misconceptions.
