VIDEO: Dr. Dahiya – What Inspires You To Help People Control Their Weight?

Dr. Dahiya describes the inspiration he harnesses to help patients gain control of their weight.

Dr. Dahiya:
It took us a while. In the medical profession we used to say, “Well, you know, so you gain weight, that’s your problem.” Eventually we came to realize no, it’s a disease. Once you make it that it’s a disease, it becomes easier for a physician to handle.

At that time, we were trained, that’s why we went in the profession. We like helping people. So it falls in that line. So it’s kind of like just a matter of realizing that this is not something that, you know, these are self-destructive people. It’s just like any other disease, whether you call food addiction or whatever it is, but it’s something that needs the help of a physician in a more compassionate manner. So that’s sort of what steers us in that line.

The other thing that drives us to that is, it’s such a big difference in the quality of a person--their diabetes, all of a sudden, gone. Their blood pressure-90% gone; sleep apneas–gone. It’s like all of a sudden that 200 pounds of extra backpack they used to carry is gone, so your joints behave differently, like very eloquently one grandfather put it one time. He says, “Doc, my grandson used to tease me, ’Ha, Grandpa, you know you can’t catch me.’ Now he can’t escape me. I can catch him.”

So those are the things that you can give people, again that those gear to our inspiration–hey, let’s help.
