VIDEO: Dr. Finkenberg – How Does Activity Contribute To Healthy Bones?

October 14, 2009 - 1:05pm 346 reads 0 comments

Dr. Finkenberg describes how staying active helps to maintain healthy bones.

Dr. Finkenberg:
In addition to taking the vitamins and minerals, I think it’s very important to be active. We found over the years that without doing weight-bearing type resistive exercises, the bones tend to lose their density. For women, particularly after they hit menopause, you do lose about a percent of your calcium every year, and so the goal is to build up that reserve of calcium before you hit menopause, and certainly the best way to do that is with exercise and activities before that time comes.

Once you do hit menopause, though, in addition to taking these medications, should they be warranted, it’s important to keep up the exercise because bone tends to form more density with regard to calcium with extra weight-bearing status.
