VIDEO: Dr. Finkenberg – Which Patients Benefit From Kyphoplasty?

October 14, 2009 - 11:57am 61 reads 0 comments

Dr. Finkenberg describes the patients who benefit from a kyphoplasty procedure.

Dr. Finkenberg:
Really anything that results in a compression fracture of the vertebrae can be benefitted from a vertebral augmentation or kyphoplasty. You can get compression fractures from things other than trauma, and that includes things like multiple myeloma, lymphoma, other types of tumors.

The only thing that you have to be careful of is that should a fracture occur that there are no fragments pressing back towards the spinal canal, and that is true with the vertebroplasties and kyphoplasties because obviously you are expanding materials inside the vertebrae, and you would not want to create any movement of that bone towards the canal.

But other than infections and possibly allergies to the components that make up the bone cement, there really are no other contraindications.
