VIDEO: Dr. Horton – What Is Ankle Arthritis?

October 17, 2009 - 10:25pm 61 reads 0 comments

Dr. Horton introduces himself and describes ankle arthritis and the symptoms.

Dr. Horton:
Hello, my name is Eric Horton and I am an orthopedic surgeon here at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego, California, and I am a foot and ankle specialist, which means I specialize in the treatment of problems affecting the bones and joints of the foot and leg.

Well, ankle arthritis involves the ankle joint, and the ankle joint is formed by the tibia bone, the fibula bone, and the talus bone, and the talus opposes the tibia and forms the ankle joint that is essentially a rolling joint, similar to a hinge, and the surfaces that become involved with arthritis are on the top of the talus and the end of the tibia.

Common symptoms for patients with ankle arthritis typically involve pain and swelling and then eventually a loss of range of motion and stiffness over time so that they can’t position their foot well when they walk; they don’t have a reciprocal walking ability and they start to limp and it really affects their mobility.
