Dr. Raiszadeh:
How does a patient find somebody who does this type of procedure? Well, this procedure has evolved and is very specialized for folks who can, who can take this type of approach through the muscle and be able to do it without damaging those nerves. So I think it’s mainly based on experience and the number of cases and the breadth of cases that that surgeon has done.
There are societies such as the Society for Lateral Access Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery that includes members that have extensive experience in this type of procedure, and because it’s a specialized procedure it would be best to have somebody who does have a significant amount of experience with it. There are some risks with this procedure like any procedure, and the risk avoidance is very important, and the main risks being one, the nerves that pass through those muscles, and another risk is the abdominal contents. But again, those risks are low for this type of procedure.
