VIDEO: Dr. LeBlang - Magnetic Resonance Guided Focused Ultrasound Procedure, Is It Painful?

May 20, 2009 - 2:08pm 227 reads 0 comments

Dr. LeBlang describes if the Magnetic Resonance (MR) guided Focused Ultrasound procedure for uterine fibroids is painful.

Dr. LeBlang:
During the MR guided Focused Ultrasound treatment, the patients are fully awake during the procedure. We give some conscious sedation to make you comfortable on the MRI table so that you don’t move during the procedure, but you are fully awake.

Some people feel a mild period cramping-type of pain; some people feel heat inside their pelvis. We have a few methods by which we can keep track of how painful the procedure is for you. On a scale of 1 to 10, we ask the patients to grade their discomfort, if any, after each sonication, meaning after every 30-second burst of energy that we place inside the fibroid. If the patients feel any burning or tingling in their skin or going down the leg, then I can then angle the beam slightly differently so they can avoid that discomfort.
