Dr. McLucas shares what women can expect after a uterine artery embolization procedure for fibroids.

Dr. McLucas:
Uterine artery embolization is probably not the final answer for treating fibroids. A final answer would be a pill you could take that would keep you from getting them ever, but if you have to treat fibroids, uterine artery embolization is probably the best option out there. Having said that, there are complications with anything, even the mild complications with uterine artery embolization. Everyone has pain after this procedure. Most of the time, the pain is right after the procedure, and by the time a patient would go home several hours later, the pain subsides so that we could treat them with oral medication. We tell our patients to be off work for five days as opposed to six weeks after a major surgery.

Another complication, another thing that patients need to watch out for is fever. There is a syndrome called embolization, post-embolization fever, that almost always goes away. Occasionally, it can be a real fever that’s a sign of an infection. So you got to be very careful, to be in touch with your health provider afterwards.

Patients will spot for about a month after the procedure. It’s nothing serious. There are complications that can happen if there’s a fibroid that’s on a stalk inside the uterus. The patient might pass that fibroid. It’s a very simple procedure to take it out, but it’s a possibility that could happen.
