Dr. McLucas:
When I am asked who is the right candidate for uterine artery embolization, I usually think to myself, who is not a candidate? So many women are. We know that if the uterus is bigger than the size of a 20-week pregnancy, that’s above the umbilicus or belly button, the chances of that fibroid shrinking 50% and giving fibroid relief are a little bit lower. We have treated patients with a uterus that big, but the results aren’t quite as good.

An area of controversy in uterine artery embolization remains the woman who wants to have children. We’ve had about 40% of our patients under the age of 40 who have wanted to have a pregnancy, been able to conceive, and bring pregnancy to full term.
