Dr. McLucas:
Uterine artery embolization is a new technique that was developed first in France in the late 1980s and brought to the United States by myself and my colleague Dr. Scott Goodwin, who performed the first uterine artery embolizations in this country in 1994. Since then, we’ve done probably, our group has done probably around 5,000 of these procedures worldwide. Whereas in the United States in 1994 when we started, there were only 50 being done, and they were all done right here at UCLA. Now there’s probably 50 being done in the state of California every day. So 250,000 worldwide, it’s a rapidly growing procedure.
