Dr. Raiszadeh:
Lumbar disc disease is an over generalized term on what the disc has done. So you have five, in your low back there are five bones in your back, and between each bone there are discs in between each one of those bones. Those discs, 70 percent of the disc is water, and in addition to the water you have other material in the disc that allows you to be flexible.

So when that water and that hydration, what we call it, wears out then you have a lumbar degenerative disc disease. Now what’s the cause of it? The cause of it could be a lot of repetitive work that one does. It could be the position that you have injured, whether you had lifted something and you injured your disc or it could be genetic, but lumbar degenerative disc disease by definition means one of the discs in your low back, one or two or three, has worn out to the point that it could cause you back pain.

He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he received the Paul Harrington Award for Research.
