VIDEO: Dr. Sorof – How Does Hormone Replacement Therapy Affect The Heart?

Dr. Sorof shares how hormone replacement therapy increases a woman’s risk for heart attacks.

Dr. Sorof:
Hormone replacement therapy, during the 1990s it was thought that that would be a revolutionary way to help women get through menopause, their hot flashes. They thought that the reason why women had elevated risk of vascular disease and coronary disease was the loss of estrogen.

However, there was a large study that was performed in the early 2000s called “The women’s health initiative.” There was about 16,000 women that were enrolled and what it told us actually that adding hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone, to women’s regimen increased the number of heart attacks and increased the number of strokes, especially people who were predisposed to having them.

So we really don’t recommend that people take hormone replacement especially if they have not been screened and especially if they have a strong family history. The other thing we do know is that it increases the chances of breast cancer and uterine cancer. So we really don’t advocate hormone replacement therapy in any form at all.

Dr. Suzanne Sorof, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. She earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She also completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals Residency Program. Dr. Sorof completed her cardiology fellowship at MetroHealth Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She then completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Sorof has extensive training and experience in all aspects of clinical cardiology as well as cardiac and peripheral intervention.
