VIDEO: Dr. Sorof – What Is The Difference Between An ECG, EKG, And EEG?

September 21, 2009 - 2:59pm 285 reads 0 comments

Dr. Sorof explains the differences between an ECG, EKG, and an EEG.

Dr. Sorof:
An ECG and an EKG are the same exact thing. It’s an electrocardiogram. Both of them are of the heart. It is different than an EEG, which is when a neurologist will check the electricity currents in the brain.

An echocardiogram is different than in EKG. An EKG just tells how the conduction is or the electricity across the heart. An echocardiogram is actually an ultrasound that we could look into each of the chambers of the heart, examine the valves, measure the pressures across each of the valves and diagnose somebody with a problem that could be causing somebody to be short of breath.

We can also measure how thick the heart muscle is, how it pumps, how it pumps under stress. It gives us a picture in 3-D imaging rather than just a snapshot of the electrical currents of the heart.
